Greek salad

Greek salad or so called village salad as it is called in its homeland is a dish, which prepared from some red tomatoes, tasty and fresh cucumbers, delicious feta and addition of aroma shallots and local olives.

Everything is dressed with scent olive oil with a bit of salt. Black pepper as well as oregano and garlic are used as to your personal taste, but they are not obligatory.

What products to take

  • Tomatoes – 2 pcs.
  • Cucumbers (small) – 3 pcs.
  • Onion salad (red) – 1 pc.
  • Olives are large, with pit – 300 g
  • Paprika – 1 pc.
  • Feta cheese (or sheep cheese) – 200 g
  • Oregano (dry) – 0.5 tsp.
  • Olive oil – 50-70 ml
  • Ground black pepper – to your own taste
  • Salt – to your own taste
  • Greens (for decoration) – to taste

How to prepare this dish

 Before you starting to cook this very dish, it is recommended to mind the following information. Very often people prefer to take paprika, traditionally green.  Other components as, for example, capers or anchovies are not popular, they are considered to be less common nowadays.

By the way we would like to mention that in almost all English-speaking countries, this salad recipe includes a leaf salad, onions or/and paprika. In some cases you can add other ingredients, like beef, for instance. But in Greece itself, there are no such introductions. You should pay attention to one important thing. – During Greek salad preparation the components are chopped, not crushed.

If you are going to cook original Greek salad, don’t forget to peel the cucumber thoroughly. By the way the Greeks prefer do not mix everything in advance and do it immediately before serving and eating.

Step 1

Open a jar of olives and pour the liquid from inside.

Step 2

Cucumbers are washed, cut into large semicircles.

Step 3

Wash the tomatoes, cut them into large pieces.

Step 4

Wash paprika, remove all the seeds and cut into strips.

Step 5

Cheese has to be cut into large cubes.

Step 6

Onions are cleaned, washed and cut into thin rings.

Step 7

All the ingredients are put into a salad bowl. Sprinkle your Greek salad by dry oregano, salt and pepper. Pour salad with olive oil and after that it may be served. This dish can be mixed at the table.
Delicious Greek salad is ready.
